The Kerala High Court has made an important observation regarding the Vidyarambham ceremony, which is the initiation of children into the world of letters. The court stated that it is unacceptable to force or induce children to write or recite prayers that go against their parents’ choice. It emphasized that this practice goes against free thought and freedom of belief. The court highlighted that India is a land of religious pluralism and it is important to respect individual choices and beliefs. The court warned against any action that tears at the constitutional fabric and undermines the liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship. The court recorded the assurances given by the municipality and library committee that there will be no compulsion on parents to participate in the program or recite prayers contrary to their beliefs. Every parent will have the freedom to choose the prayer for their child, either from the mentioned prayers or from their own beliefs.
