Ayaan Deshpande, a nine-year-old pianist, is mesmerizing audiences with his exceptional musical skills in the realm of Western classical music. Despite not having any family background in this genre, Ayaan’s journey in the field has been awe-inspiring. Initially trained in Hindustani classical vocal music, Ayaan discovered his passion for Western classical music during the Covid-19 lockdown when he started playing the keyboard. Impressed by his talent, Ayaan’s parents enrolled him in the piano course at the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) Music Academy. Since then, he has flourished as a concert pianist and composer.
Born in Tokyo and raised in Mumbai, Ayaan had his first public performance at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), accompanied by the SOI Chamber Orchestra. The young prodigy also had his debut solo recital showcasing works by renowned composers such as Mozart, Chopin, and Debussy, as well as his own compositions. His teacher, pianist Aida Bisengalieva, describes Ayaan as a phenomenally talented student who possesses a level of maturity and musical understanding beyond his years. His dedication and deep connection with music make him truly exceptional. Ayaan’s talent caught the attention of the Golden Key Music Festival, an annual event in New York and Vienna for student musicians, which led to his Austria tour earlier this year. During the tour, he performed at historical venues like the Ehrbar Hall and Mozarthaus, impressing audiences with his extraordinary playing and interpretation of musical pieces.
Ayaan’s musical journey began with the aid of apps and online videos, without any formal prodding. His parents, Ashwini and Tanmay, recognized his passion and decided to homeschool him, providing him with ample time for music while maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Apart from his piano skills, Ayaan has showcased his talent as a composer, creating remarkable pieces like a piano quintet, a sonata, a nocturne, and a waltz. Living on the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) campus in Mumbai, Ayaan and his family have embraced a flexible lifestyle to accommodate his busy schedule.
While Ayaan’s exceptional talent and achievements are admirable, his love for learning extends beyond music. He has a keen interest in subjects like mathematics, history, animals, and wildlife. Ayaan’s parents firmly believe that his passion and intelligence will pave the way for success in any field he chooses.
