Health officials from BBMP in Bengaluru have launched a crackdown on rooftop pubs, bars, and restaurants. The civic body, following government instructions, aims to identify and shut down illegal establishments operating on rooftops. Tushar Giri Nath, BBMP chief commissioner, stated that commercial activities on rooftops are not allowed as per existing rules. The civic body will raid such premises, cancel trade licenses, and verify the misuse of licenses in running unauthorized businesses on rooftops. So far, BBMP has issued 1,118 trade licenses to pubs, bars, and restaurants. On Friday, officials visited and inspected 232 premises, closing down 12 establishments for violating license conditions and issuing notices to 86 establishments with violations. Bengaluru reportedly has more than 200 rooftop pubs and restaurants, with east and south zones having the most illegal establishments. The crackdown comes in the wake of a fire incident at Mudpipe Cafe in Koramangala on Wednesday. In response, the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department has started conducting a safety audit of buildings with rooftop restaurants and pubs across the city. The audit aims to ensure compliance with safety norms and to identify any deviations from the issued licenses. The previous safety audit was carried out in 2018, resulting in notices being sent to over 100 establishments. The impact of the previous audit will be assessed to determine further steps.
