Russia has announced the appointment of Viktor Afzalov as the new head of the country’s Aerospace Forces. Afzalov takes over from Sergei Surovikin, who was dismissed following a short-lived rebellion against the military establishment. The rebellion was led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, who accused Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and military chief of staff Valery Gerasimov of undermining Wagner forces. Surovikin’s dismissal came shortly before Prigozhin and his top lieutenants died in a suspicious plane crash. Surovikin had previously commanded Russia’s forces in Ukraine.
