The plots and streets at English Electric Nagar at Nemillichery near Pallavaram are facing the threat of inundation during the rainy season. The area is located along the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road and has waterbodies interconnected by a channel designed to carry rainwater. However, this interlinking channel has been blocked by certain commercial establishments and houses, resulting in flooding in the residential area. The English Electric Nagar Plot and Residents’ Owner Association have filed a petition requesting authorities from the Revenue and Water Resources Departments and the Tambaram Corporation to take remedial measures to resolve the issue.
Apart from the blocked channels, the absence of cut-and-cover drains in the area exacerbates the flooding problem. Even prior to the arrival of the northeast monsoon, vacant plots in the area have been filled with rainwater, posing a health hazard. It is imperative for the officials to address the encroachments on the interlinking channel and initiate the construction of necessary drainage systems to prevent further flooding. The residents of the area recently organized a protest in hopes of bringing attention to this issue.
In response to the concerns raised, a senior official from the Tambaram Corporation announced that the Department of Highways is underway with the construction of a storm water drain network along the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road. Once completed, this network will effectively prevent inundation in the localities surrounding English Electric Nagar and provide a solution to the current flooding problem.
In another part of the city, motorists and pedestrians using Kamarajar Salai at Ramapuram are facing a new challenge in the form of stray cattle. Kamarajar Salai is a major road running parallel to St. Thomas Mount-Poonamallee Road and is home to numerous educational institutions and commercial establishments. The presence of stray cattle on the road has raised concerns regarding the safety of commuters. Residents of Ramapuram are urging the Chennai Corporation to take immediate action by impounding these stray cattle and addressing this issue promptly.
