Who controls the Rafah crossing and why is it so important to Gaza?

The Egyptian-controlled Rafah crossing is Gaza’s primary gateway to the outside world, not controlled by Israel. It serves as a critical lifeline for humanitarian aid, as well as for the movement of injured individuals and foreign passport holders. Israel’s total siege on the Palestinian enclave has made Rafah the sole entry point for Gaza’s residents. However, delivering large-scale aid through Rafah has been challenging due to the crossing’s limited capacity. Egypt, the only Arab state bordering Gaza, restricts access to prevent a destabilization of its own territory. Additionally, many Gazans are determined not to repeat the mass displacement from the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s establishment.
