The Bombay high court has expressed concern over the lack of measures to raise awareness among citizens on air pollution in Mumbai. The court has taken suo motu cognizance of the deteriorating air quality in the city and surrounding areas and has issued notices to the central and state governments and their respective pollution control boards. Reports from various media sources have highlighted the alarming scenario of air pollution in Mumbai and the urgent need to address it. The court has observed that the air quality index (AQI) levels have not improved despite certain steps taken by the BMC to mitigate air pollution. The court has appointed a senior advocate as amicus curiae to assist in the matter and has sought the assistance of the advocate general to address the issue on behalf of the state government. A PIL filed by three residents seeking directions to the BMC and the state government to curb air pollution will be heard on November 6.
