Room for Music Royalty Collection to Grow: Union Minister Piyush Goyal

Union minister Piyush Goyal has stated that the music industry’s royalty collections have seen a significant increase in the past two years. In the last two years, the royalty collections have jumped 10 times to around Rs 550 crore from Rs 50-65 crore annually. This indicates a positive growth trajectory for the industry. Goyal expressed his commitment to protecting the culture, heritage, and diversity represented by the cinema, film, and music industries. He stressed the importance of the entire industry coming together on one platform to enhance the creative industry and strengthen its soft power. The Indian music industry is expected to witness strong double-digit growth and is projected to reach Rs 3,300 crore by 2025. This indicates immense potential for further growth and development in the industry. During the meeting, industry representatives raised various pressing issues, including royalty distribution, statutory licensing, single-window licensing, and inclusive representation on the copyright society’s board. Goyal patiently listened to the stakeholders and emphasized the importance of fair and equitable distribution of royalties as per the terms decided. The issue of extending statutory licensing on the internet was also discussed and will be revisited after consultation with the stakeholders. Goyal also highlighted the need for equitable representation in copyright societies, including the representation of women and equal rights for smaller artists. He called for collective resolution of disputes by the copyright societies. Multiple registered copyright societies manage and protect the literary and creative work of artists. It was decided that the copyright societies will review their articles of association and discuss all relevant issues in a common forum. Goyal has formed a committee chaired by Anoop Jalota, which includes representation from all relevant copyright societies. The committee will discuss the issues faced by the creative industry and submit a report with solutions within 30 days.
