Government-backed hackers attempted to plant spyware made by NSO Group on the iPhone of an Indian journalist working for the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) in August. The journalist, Anand Mangnale, was among several people in India who received alerts from Apple warning them about being targeted by state-sponsored hackers. Analysis of Mangnale’s phone showed an infiltration attempt linked to NSO Group’s Pegasus hacking tool, which provides hackers with extensive access to smartphones. The use of such spyware on a journalist’s phone is considered unacceptable and politically motivated.
