Tracy Chapman, the renowned singer, made history as the first Black woman to win a Country Music Association (CMA) award. Her timeless classic, ‘Fast Car,’ originally released 35 years ago, received the prestigious Song of the Year award. The song experienced renewed popularity with a cover version by Luke Combs, propelling it up the charts. Combs’ rendition also garnered him the Single of the Year award at the 57th Annual Country Music Association Awards.

During the ceremony, presenter Sara Evans read a pre-written note from Chapman expressing her gratitude for the recognition after 35 years of the song’s debut. Chapman thanked the CMAs and gave a special thanks to Luke Combs and all the fans of ‘Fast Car.’

Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’ faced tough competition from other notable nominees such as ‘Heart Like A Truck’ and ‘Tennessee Orange.’ However, Combs’ cover version gave the song a significant boost and contributed to its success.

In an earlier interview with Billboard, Chapman reflected on her surprise at finding herself on the country charts and expressed her appreciation for the support from new fans. Combs also expressed his admiration for Chapman’s songwriting, emphasizing the impact of ‘Fast Car’ on him since he first heard it with his dad.
