Children’s Day: A Day to Celebrate Childhood in India
    Uncategorized

Today is the day to celebrate childhood. Every year, Children’s Day is observed on November 14 across India. This day also coincides with the birth anniversary of Pandit Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. Nehru, often referred to as ‘Chacha Nehru’, was known for his love of kids and his efforts to further the cause of child rights. He launched the Children’s Film Society in 1955 to promote entertainment for kids.

Children’s Day is celebrated with great fanfare at several schools and institutions in India. Cultural programs are held to commemorate the occasion.

Children’s Day was originally introduced as Flower Day in 1948 by the Indian Council of Child Welfare. Its purpose was to support the rights and empowerment of underprivileged children. In 1951, VM Kulkarni, a United Nations Social Welfare Fellow, suggested celebrating Pandit Nehru’s birthday as Flag Day to raise funds for NGOs focused on child welfare. Nehru approved the idea, and the first Children’s Day was celebrated in 1954.

Although very few movies in India are geared towards kids, there are some gems worth watching. One such film is ‘Taare Zameen Par’ (2007), directed by Aamir Khan, which tells the story of a shy boy struggling with dyslexia. Another movie is ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ (2003) directed by Rakesh Roshan, exploring the sci-fi genre in Bollywood. ‘Makdee’ (2002), directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, is a spine-chilling tale about a village terrorized by a blood-thirsty witch. ‘Halo’ (1996), directed by Santosh Sivan, explores the bond between a little girl and her dog.
