The family of Jagtar Singh Johal, a Scottish Sikh activist who has been detained in India for six years, is appealing to the new foreign secretary for intervention in his case. Johal is facing charges of terrorism in connection with political violence in the northern part of the country. His brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, has written a letter to David Cameron, calling for a meeting and urging him to advocate for Jagtar’s release. The UK government has stated that it is committed to seeing the case resolved and is providing consular assistance to Johal and his family. Despite being on trial for serious charges since 2022, Johal has not been convicted of any crime. Last year, a UN panel of human rights experts declared his detention arbitrary and called for his release, but the Indian authorities maintain that due process is being followed. The family is hopeful that the new foreign secretary will leverage Britain’s strong relationship with India and work to bring Jagtar back home.
