Top foreign policy officials from the Palestinian Authority and four Muslim-majority countries will visit China on Monday and Tuesday, Beijing announced on Sunday. The officials visiting China include the foreign ministers of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and Indonesia. The Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation will also be part of the delegation. The visit aims to promote a de-escalation of the current Palestinian-Israeli conflict, protect civilians, and find a just resolution to the Palestinian issue, according to the Chinese foreign ministry. China has historically been sympathetic to the Palestinians and has supported a two-state solution. Following the outbreak of war last month, Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi, called for an immediate ceasefire and a cooling down of the situation. Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group ruling Gaza, following its October 7 attacks, which the Israeli government claims led to the deaths of 1,200 people and the taking of 240 hostages. Hamas, on the other hand, has reported that 12,300 people have been killed in Israel’s relentless aerial bombardment and ground operations. Both sides have suffered civilian casualties.
