OpenAI’s Ilya Sutskever deeply regrets his actions leading to Sam Altman’s ouster

OpenAI cofounder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever has publicly expressed remorse for his role in the board’s decision to remove former CEO Sam Altman. Sutskever, in a statement on social media platform X, stated that he deeply regrets his participation in the board’s actions and that he never intended to harm OpenAI. He also emphasized his love for the company and his commitment to doing everything he can to reunite it. Sutskever’s comments come as Microsoft announced that Altman and Greg Brockman, another former OpenAI executive, will be leading a new advanced AI research team at the tech giant.

The board of directors at OpenAI, which includes Sutskever, ousted Altman last Friday, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership abilities. Alongside Sutskever, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, tech entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner, director of strategy at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, were also involved in the decision. The disagreements between Altman and the board were reportedly centered around AI safety, the speed of technology development, and the commercialization of the company.

According to Bloomberg, a month ago, Sutskever’s responsibilities at OpenAI were reduced due to friction with Altman and Brockman. However, Sutskever appealed to the board and managed to gain support from some members.

In the midst of this leadership change, Microsoft announced that Altman and Brockman will be joining the company to lead a new advanced AI research team. Some of Altman’s colleagues from OpenAI will also be joining Microsoft. This move by Microsoft comes as the tech giant continues to invest in AI research and development.

It remains to be seen how OpenAI will move forward following Altman’s departure and Sutskever’s expression of regret. The company, known for its advancements in artificial intelligence, will need to navigate these changes to maintain its position as a leader in the field.
