President Joe Biden celebrated his 81st birthday on Monday and used humor to address concerns about his age. Despite polls suggesting that many Americans view Biden as too old to be effective, the White House defended his experience and stamina. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that Biden’s age should not be the primary focus, highlighting his successful championing of major legislation and visits to active war zones. Biden himself joked about the difficulties of turning 60. Concerns about age have also been raised regarding former President Donald Trump, who is 77. However, a letter from Trump’s physician emphasized his excellent health and ability to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
Biden’s age has been a topic of discussion as he seeks a second term. An August poll found that a majority of US adults, including a significant number of Democrats, viewed Biden as too old to be effective for another four years. However, the same poll also found that a majority of adults and a smaller percentage of Republicans felt that Trump was too old for a second term.
The issue has been highlighted by David Axelrod, a former adviser to Barack Obama, who expressed skepticism about Biden’s chances in the 2024 election. Jean-Pierre, on the other hand, downplayed the negative polling and comments from Axelrod. She stated that the Bidens would spend the president’s birthday as they traditionally have, with a family gathering for Thanksgiving. She also reiterated that voters would make up their own minds about Biden’s age and abilities.
In April, when announcing his reelection campaign, Biden stated that his age does not affect him and that voters would judge whether he still has what it takes. The White House reiterated that the president’s age should be judged based on his accomplishments and experience, rather than just his numbers.
