Taiwan Reports Chinese Fighters and Bombers Nearby as Election Campaign Heats Up

Taiwan reported another instance of Chinese military activity near the island, as 11 aircraft crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait. The move came as Taiwan was in the midst of its presidential and parliamentary election campaign. This is not the first time that China has engaged in military drills and patrols close to Taiwan, in an attempt to pressure Taipei regarding its claim of sovereignty. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party registered its presidential ticket, while the opposition remained divided about a joint bid. Taiwan’s defense ministry detected J-10 and J-16 fighters, H-6 bombers, and early warning aircraft engaged in overseas missions. Eleven of these aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, flying towards the center and southwest of the island. Taiwan dispatched its own forces to monitor the situation. China’s defense ministry did not respond to requests for comment. China justifies its activities near Taiwan as a means to prevent collusion between Taiwan separatists and the United States and to safeguard its territorial integrity. However, Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and asserts that its people alone have the right to determine their future. The main opposition party, Kuomintang, advocates for close ties with Beijing and has promised to reopen dialogue if it wins the election.
