The State government of Karnataka has reappointed K. Jayaprakash Hegde as the chairman of Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes. According to a notification, his tenure will continue until January 31, 2024, or until the submission of the socio-economic and educational survey (caste census). This reappointment follows the bitter opposition from the Veerashaiva/Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities regarding the data collected for the caste census in 2015. The government had instructed the commission to use the data collected by H. Kantharaj Commission to create a new report, and sources say that the report is 90% complete. Additionally, there has been controversy surrounding the original report of the Kantharaj commission, which is said to be missing. However, sources assure that the original authenticated data is still intact. Read more on this story.
