Epic movie Napoleon, which is currently playing on the big screen, will be streamed on Apple TV+ next year. According to the director of the historical epic, Ridley Scott, the movie will be streamed with an extra hour of material. The epic movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte and Vanessa Kirby as his wife Josephine, has a runtime of 2 1⁄2-hours. Scott is preparing an extended cut with about an extra hour of material for Apple TV+ and called it “would be too fat for cinema”. He says the movie that’s currently in theaters ‘is my judgment on what I call the ‘bum ache factor.’ There comes a point in the performance when the audience thinks to themselves, ‘Jesus, is it really going to be an hour and a half before we have that Japanese dinner? I’m worn out.’ That is not what you want to occur. The theatrical version omitted a few of Kirby’s most beloved scenes, including one in which Napoleon is attempted to be assassinated. Kirby remarks, ‘That was a really amazing day filming in her life.’ A crucial scene that Scott claims is ‘absolutely’ included in the extended cut shows Josephine choosing to chop off her hair while in prison during the Reign of Terror. She was arrested shortly after her first husband, who was later beheaded. In the theatrical cut, Josephine is first seen in Paris shortly after being released from prison, sporting a pixie cut, before meeting the man who would become her future husband and the French emperor. Kirby states that ‘I really learned, when I read about that part of her life, how much of a survivor she is and how close she came to death,’ and for more historical context, Kirby suggests reading Kate Williams’ biography ‘Josephine: Desire, Ambition, Napoleon.’ ‘She really was a day away from being killed. I can only imagine that you would commit so much more intensely to life, which I think is why she ended up as empress. I feel like that was a big, huge part of changing her, the nature of her personality and her ability to adapt,’ Kirby added.
