Bhongir in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, previously known as Nalgonda, holds significant historical importance and has been a prominent site of agitation and struggle in the state of Andhra Pradesh, prior to the formation of Telangana. It was in Bhongir that the ‘Bhongir Telangana Declaration’ demanding a separate state was passed in 1996. Over the years, Bhongir has witnessed the decline of Maoism and the influence of political parties like CPI and CPI-M. The current electoral contest in Bhongir is between BRS MLA P Shekhara Reddy and Congress candidate K Anil Kumar Reddy, both known for their wealth and business interests. Shekhara Reddy defeated Anil Kumar Reddy in the previous elections. Despite Congress making efforts to win the seat with the support of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the BRS camp remains confident of their MLA’s success with a larger margin.
