Argentina’s President-elect Javier Milei visited the White House on Tuesday for a meeting with senior Biden administration officials. This marked his first international trip since winning the presidential runoff. The right-wing Milei had a positive meeting with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, where they discussed economic issues and shared priorities such as investing in technology, clean energy, human rights, and democracy. Argentina’s incoming leader expressed his alignment with the West’s geopolitical agenda and his commitment to freedom. Sullivan conveyed the US’s willingness to cooperate in the transition of the Argentine government given the challenging circumstances the country is facing. The meeting was attended by other officials, including Juan Gonzalez, Brian Nichols, and US Ambassador to Argentina Marc Stanley. Milei’s visit to Washington also included meetings with officials from the International Monetary Fund and the US Treasury Department. Milei, a libertarian economist, plans to take office on December 10 and is known for his admiration of former US President Donald Trump. He aims to address Argentina’s high inflation and replace the national currency with the US dollar. The IMF has a loan program providing financial support to Argentina. It remains to be seen how Milei’s policies will shape Argentina’s future.
