As former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger passed away, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh recalled the impact Kissinger and then US President Richard Nixon had on India in 1971. However, Ramesh praised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her close aide P N Haksar, stating that they were more than a match for Kissinger and Nixon. Ramesh lauded Kissinger’s intellectual brilliance and charisma, highlighting his controversial yet consequential life. He also mentioned his book ‘Intertwined Lives: PN Haksar & Indira Gandhi’, which provides detailed accounts of the encounters between Kissinger, Nixon, Indira Gandhi, and Haksar. Ramesh further mentioned Gary Bass’s book ‘The Blood Telegram’, which criticizes Kissinger’s role in the events leading to the creation of Bangladesh.
