Andhra Pradesh Takes Over Half of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam in Midnight Operation
    Uncategorized

In a midnight operation just hours before the Telangana elections, the government of Andhra Pradesh took control of half of the Nagarjuna Sagar dam on the Krishna river and released water to its side. The dispute over the dam has been ongoing since 2014 when Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh. Telangana’s government has lodged a complaint with the Krishna River Management Board against AP’s occupation and barricading of the dam. Around 400 police personnel along with irrigation officials from Andhra Pradesh entered the dam and took control of half of its 36 gates. When Telangana officials arrived, an argument ensued but they eventually returned. AP officials allegedly refused entry to Telangana vehicles without state addresses. Telangana officials claim that a similar attempt was made three years ago but was thwarted. A senior official from Telangana said that AP has been planning this operation for the past few weeks and has damaged CCTV cameras and an automated entry gate at the dam.
