Even though Congress grabbed majority of seats in the Telangana election, Congress’s Mohammad Azharuddin lost to Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s Maganti Gopinath from Jubilee Hills by over 16,000 votes. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) continued its grip on the Hyderabad region, winning 17 seats while its friendly party All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) retained all its seven seats.

The Congress has wrested power from BRS by winning 64 seats in the 119-member Assembly. The BRS stood second with 39 seats. The BJP and the AIMIM bagged eight and seven seats, respectively. The CPI won the remaining seat.

A delegation of Congress leaders led by party General Secretary in-charge of Telangana Manikrao Thakare and Telangana state President A. Revanth Reddy called on Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan at Raj Bhavan on Sunday night to stake claim for government formation. They were accompanied by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, other AICC observers, and former state President Uttam Kumar Reddy. They submitted a list of newly-elected Congress MLAs to the Governor.

Shivakumar told media persons outside Raj Bhavan that they staked claim for forming the government with 65 MLAs. He said a meeting of newly-elected MLAs will be held at 9.30 a.m. Monday.
