The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has announced its intent to install 10,786 CCTV cameras in 786 of its schools to ensure student safety. This comes less than a week after the civic body passed a proposal to recruit nearly 3,000 security guards. The installation will include 10 IP-enabled vandal dome cameras and five bullet cameras in each school. Additionally, there will be a two terabyte hard disk attached to every camera, along with an internet connection. The cameras will feature motion sensors and will start recording upon detecting any movement. Cameras placed in vulnerable areas will have night vision capabilities. The selected agency for installation will provide four-year annual maintenance contracts and one year of warranty. An official from the civic body’s education department stated that this project will be a milestone in ensuring continuous monitoring of vulnerable points on school premises. However, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor raised concerns over the budget for the project, arguing that the civic body’s upcoming budget does not allocate funds for it. Kapoor also emphasized the need to ensure that schools which already have CCTV cameras are not billed again for installation.
