Cyclone Michaung Makes Landfall in Andhra Pradesh, Thousands Evacuated

Cyclone Michaung has made landfall in Andhra Pradesh, starting the landfall process shortly after noon. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the landfall will continue for the next 3 hours. According to the IMD, the severe cyclonic storm Michaung, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110, is crossing the south Andhra Pradesh coast close to Bapatla. The IMD has also stated that the cyclone is likely to move nearly northwards. Around 9,450 people have been evacuated to safety so far. Twelve people have lost their lives, and multiple roads and subways have been closed due to waterlogging caused by the cyclone. Chennai airport, one of the busiest airports in the country, has resumed operations after being shut for hours due to adverse weather conditions. In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin has inspected the cyclone-affected areas and rain relief camps. The state has set up 162 relief centers, accommodating 2,477 Chennai residents, with 20 operational kitchens providing food.
