West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has requested for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the disbursement of funds for the 100-day work scheme. She made this announcement during a rally in Alipurduar today. Banerjee plans to travel to New Delhi from 18-20 December and hopes to meet the Prime Minister along with some Members of Parliament.

The 100-day work scheme, also known as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), guarantees 100 days of wage employment to rural households in India. It is a social security measure aimed at providing employment opportunities and improving living standards in rural areas.

Banerjee’s request for a meeting comes in the backdrop of the West Bengal government’s alleged non-receipt of funds from the central government for the scheme. She intends to discuss the release of pending funds with the Prime Minister and seek his intervention to ensure timely disbursement.

The Chief Minister’s meeting with the Prime Minister assumes significance as it brings to the forefront the ongoing tussle between the West Bengal government and the central government. Banerjee has been at loggerheads with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government on various issues.

Banerjee’s decision to involve MPs in the meeting can be seen as a strategic move to present a united front and amplify her demand for the release of funds. By including MPs from her party, the Trinamool Congress, she aims to garner support in her efforts to secure the required funds for the scheme.

The 100-day work scheme has played a crucial role in providing livelihood opportunities to rural households, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Banerjee’s push for the disbursement of funds highlights the importance of ensuring the smooth functioning of the scheme and delivering on its objectives.

As Banerjee prepares to meet Prime Minister Modi, all eyes will be on the outcome of the meeting and whether it will lead to a resolution of the funding issue. The meeting also holds significance in terms of the political dynamics between the West Bengal government and the central government.
