Calling electrification in India’s transport sector one of the most significant opportunities, US Special Envoy on Climate Change John Kerry highlighted the importance of pursuing this initiative to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, reduce pollution, and enhance the country’s overall security. Speaking at the global climate talks COP28, Kerry emphasized that rapid electrification aligns with environmental goals and contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable, and secure future for India. He also emphasized the crucial role of supply chains in India’s economy and the commitment to electrify 50,000 buses. Kerry highlighted the need for collaboration to maximize domestic opportunities and decarbonize the transportation sector. This initiative builds upon India’s past successes in deploying 50,000 electric vehicles and represents a significant stride towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation practices. Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also emphasized the importance of electric vehicles in achieving net-zero emissions and the challenges faced by public transport authorities in transitioning to e-buses. Yadav highlighted the India-US Payment Security Mechanism as an incentive for Indian and international manufacturers to participate in e-bus operations and potentially establish a manufacturing hub in India, contributing to the growth of the e-bus industry and exports. The electrification of India’s transport sector is a crucial step towards a greener and more sustainable future.
