Repeated Infections of COVID Not Good for Health, Says Anurag Agrawal

Public health experts do not expect an overload on the health system, as India sees an uptick in the number of Covid cases. The increase in the cases earlier had seen burnout hitting at all levels of healthcare force. Anurag Agrawal, Insacog’s former head and chair of the World Health Organization’s technical advisory group on virus evolution, however, says that there is nothing to worry on that front. However, he said that ‘repeated infections’ won’t be good for health. ‘What repeated infections will do over the long term is not fully known but certainly won’t be good,’ he said. He stressed on the need for precautions like ventilation and possibly non-compulsory use of masks by vulnerable people in closed crowded settings. So far the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (Insacog) has not found anything ‘unusual’, a member of the network said, adding that there is nothing to panic. Amid an uptick, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya will hold a high-level review meeting on Wednesday with the states to review preparedness of health facilities and services. The meeting will be held with health ministers and additional chief principal secretaries (health) of all states and union territories (UTs) and officials of central ministries and departments concerned.
