While Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction, BJP’s ally in Maharashtra, is actively talking of the need for a caste census in the state, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has opposed the idea. Shridhar Ghadge, a senior RSS Pracharak, expressed concerns that a caste census would further divide the Hindu community and perpetuate the caste system. Ghadge made these remarks during a visit by BJP and Shiv Sena MLAs to pay homage to RSS founder KB Hedgewar. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who heads a faction of the NCP, has been advocating for a caste census to resolve quota disputes in Maharashtra. However, Ghadge argued that a caste survey would create more problems and perpetuate inequalities. He cited Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that caste should be eliminated in a time-bound manner and emphasized the importance of social equality. The RSS’s position on this issue holds significance as it differs from the stance of the Maharashtra government.
