Ukraine’s government has proposed to terminate the free trade agreement with Belarus, citing the involvement of Belarus in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The decision was announced by cabinet minister Taras Melnychuk on Monday. The government argues that the agreement should be cancelled due to a fundamental change of circumstances, specifically the involvement of Belarus in illegal use of force against Ukraine. The free trade agreement, which dates back to December 1992, along with two related protocols, is now up for termination in parliament. Ukraine had already suspended its trade relations with Belarus following Russia’s invasion. This move marks a significant shift in Ukraine’s trade policies and could have implications for its trade partnership with Belarus. Prior to the invasion, Belarus was one of Ukraine’s main trading partners, supplying a substantial amount of fuel and fertilisers to Kyiv. It remains to be seen how the termination of the free trade agreement would impact their economic relationship and whether Ukraine will seek alternative trading arrangements.
