CPI in Puducherry calls for electricity subsidy

The CPI in Puducherry has called for providing electricity to consumers at subsidised rates in the wake of the Puducherry Electricity Department’s proposal for another round of tariff revision. A. M. Saleem, CPI State secretary, highlighted that another tariff hike would place an unbearable burden on consumers who are already struggling with substantial monthly bills. He pointed out that the monthly bills were unclear about the various components and charges. The Electricity Department justifies the hike due to higher purchase costs of energy from entities like the Puducherry Power Corporation and NLC. The practice of increasing charges multiple times a year also adds to the burden. The CPI leader suggested that the government should consider implementing subsidies for electricity, similar to LPG subsidies, to ease the hardships faced by the common man.
