The Centre has rejected Bengal’s proposed Republic Day tableau highlighting CM Mamata Banerjee’s pet project, Kanyashree, for the third time in eight years, causing the Trinamool Congress government to cry foul. Bengal’s Minister Shashi Panja expressed disappointment, stating that the Union government failed to acknowledge the internationally applauded Kanyashree Prakalpa. The defence ministry, which usually screens proposals for Republic Day tableaux, allegedly rejected Bengal’s proposal without allowing state officials to make a presentation. This move has led to accusations of partisanship by the Trinamool Congress. Bengal’s proposal for a Kanyashree tableau was previously rejected in 2015 and 2020, and this is the fifth time the state’s proposals have been denied for Republic Day tableaux. In 2022, a tableau themed on Netaji and INA’s was also rejected, leading CM Mamata Banerjee to write to PM Modi. The rejection of other state proposals where non-BJP parties are in power further highlights claims of partisanship by the Centre.
