Deepfakes Deceive Voters from India to Indonesia Before Elections

Divyendra Singh Jadoun, a specialist in artificial intelligence-based visual effects and voice clones from India, has been approached by politicians requesting AI videos, or deepfakes, for their election campaigns. With upcoming elections in India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, the spread of misinformation on social media is a major concern. Deepfakes, which are AI-generated videos or audio that appear authentic, have the potential to influence voter perceptions and behavior. There are currently no guidelines on deepfakes, and platforms like Facebook and YouTube are struggling to keep up with their detection and removal. Laws have been passed in India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh to combat misinformation, but more proactive measures are needed to address the issue of deepfakes and their impact on democratic processes.
