Desi anti-drone system to be installed along Pakistan border in 6 months

A fully-indigenous anti-drone system is set to be installed across India’s western border in six months to block drones being used by elements in Pakistan to smuggle arms and narcotics into India, particularly Punjab. Trials of the anti-drone technology are currently underway, with three options being tested. The system to be deployed along the entire western border will either consist of one of the three tested systems or a combination of two or more technologies. Pakistani drones dropping arms, ammunition, and narcotics have been a major problem for Indian security agencies for years. The Border Security Force (BSF) has recovered 90 drones, including 81 in Punjab and nine in Rajasthan, between November 2022 and October 2023. Drone sightings have increased to 300-400 in the past year, prompting the BSF to enhance surveillance using handheld static and vehicle-mounted anti-drone systems. Smugglers have been forced to revise their tactics, such as using the Rajasthan route instead of Punjab, to evade BSF surveillance. However, the BSF’s updated surveillance systems and heightened vigilance have made it increasingly difficult for smugglers to evade detection. In response, smugglers have resorted to flying smaller drones with lighter payloads. Most drones flown from Pakistan are of Chinese make due to their availability and affordability compared to those from Turkey or Iran.
