Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has said that a committee comprising of all the tribal communities of Manipur will be formed to deliberate on the demand for deletion or inclusion of Chin-Kuki from the Scheduled Tribes list of the state. The committee’s report will be forwarded as proposals to the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs. The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs had recently written to the Additional Chief Secretary of Manipur to examine the representation seeking deletion of the “Nomadic Chin-Kuki” from the list of Scheduled Tribes in Manipur. The letter from the ministry stated that the recommendation from the state government is a prerequisite to process the case further. The Manipur government has been asked by the Centre to examine a representation seeking deletion of the “Nomadic Chin-Kuki” from the list of Scheduled Tribes in Manipur. The Union government said that the process of inclusion or exclusion from the ST list requires the proposal to originate from the concerned state government and thus it sent the representation to the state government for its recommendation. Manipur witnessed violent clashes, attacks, counter attacks, and arsoning of properties during and after the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ called by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) to oppose the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
