The police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have registered a case against eight persons, including actor Nayanthara, over allegations that certain scenes in her newly released film ‘Annapoorani’ have hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. The film has drawn controversy for allegedly promoting Love Jihad and showing disrespect to Hindu deities.
In the film, a Hindu Brahmin girl is shown having a relationship with a Muslim boy, wearing a hijab and offering namaz. It also features a 13-year-old Brahmin girl who turns into a meat-eater in pursuit of her passion to become the best chef in India. Some parts of the film are accused of disrespecting Lord Ram.
Police complaints have been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code for promoting enmity between different groups, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and offense committed in a place of worship. The film has been removed from Netflix following the controversy.
