The Odisha government has instructed all doctors in the state to write prescriptions in proper legible handwriting or in a typed form, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Medical Commission. The decision comes after the Orissa High Court highlighted the adverse impact of illegible handwriting on the comprehension of medico-legal reports and post-mortem reports. The court observed that the casual approach of doctors in writing these reports has made it difficult for the judicial system to understand the content. To address this issue, the court directed the Chief Secretary to issue a circular to all medical centers, private clinics, and medical colleges, emphasizing the importance of legible handwriting or typed reports. The court further urged doctors dealing with medico-legal issues to write in capital letters or in a typed form to alleviate the burden on the judicial system. By implementing this directive, the Odisha government aims to improve the appreciation of evidence in the judicial system.
