Adam Azim, representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has won the Male mayoral by-election, defeating Azima Shakoor from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). The victory is seen as a significant blow to President Mohamed Muizzu and his policies, as Male has expressed its clear disapproval just 58 days into his term. With 45% of the votes, Azim outperformed Shukoor, who received only 29%. As the former CEO of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Azim brings with him extensive experience in the public sector. Prior to his role at MTCC, he served as the Managing Director of the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and the State Trading Organization (STO).
