Adam Azim, representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has won the Male mayoral by-election, defeating Azima Shakoor from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). The victory is seen as a significant blow to President Mohamed Muizzu and his policies, as Male has expressed its clear disapproval just 58 days into his term. With 45% of the votes, Azim outperformed Shukoor, who received only 29%. As the former CEO of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Azim brings with him extensive experience in the public sector.
