Last year, Apple faced an import ban on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 smartwatches in the US following a complaint by medical monitoring technology company Masimo. However, the ban was temporarily paused the next day by a US appeals court, and Apple has reportedly found a way to bypass the ban on its newer Apple Watch models. Apple’s redesign removes the pulse oximetry feature, which is at the heart of the patent dispute with Masimo. The complainant alleges that Apple stole its pulse oximetry technology and hired its employees to develop the feature in its smartwatches. In response, Apple countersued Masimo for patent infringement and claimed that the legal actions were aimed at eliminating competition. The US International Trade Commission (ITC) issued a ban on Apple’s current Series 9 and Ultra 2 watches. However, Apple’s proposed redesign, which removes the pulse oximetry feature, applies only to the US market. The details of the redesign have not been publicly disclosed by Apple. While the US court is still deliberating on whether to continue the pause or reinstate the ban, Apple is currently allowed to sell the Apple Watch models in question.
