Approximately 35% of Joshimath, a town that experienced severe land subsidence last year, is located in a high-risk zone, as reported by the disaster management department. Ranjit Sinha, the department’s secretary, revealed this information during a public consultation on rehabilitation and reconstruction. Following an on-field survey, 14 high-risk zones spread across Joshimath have been identified by technical teams. The government has allocated 25 hectares of land near Gauchar in Bomoth village for relocation; however, residents are expressing their reluctance to move. Sinha also stated that no new construction will be allowed in the town until experts confirm the stabilization of the land. The district administration will take action against any new construction reported. The Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (JBSS), a residents’ group, has submitted a nine-point memorandum raising concerns about unfulfilled promises made in April 2023.
