Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a grand temple to Hindu god Ram in the flashpoint holy city of Ayodhya. The temple was built on a site believed to be the birthplace of the deity. The construction of the temple replaces a 16th-Century mosque that was razed by Hindu mobs in 1992, resulting in nationwide riots that caused the death of nearly 2,000 people. The inauguration of the temple coincides with the upcoming general elections in which PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party seeks a historic third term in power.
