Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee concluded the multi-faith Sampriti Rally in Kolkata, where she raised questions about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) attitude towards women. The rally took place around six hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi consecrated the Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya. Banerjee addressed a crowd of about one lakh people, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence and criticizing other opposition parties for their failure to oppose the BJP’s brand of politics. She began the rally with a visit to the Kalighat temple and subsequently stopped at a gurdwara, church, and mosque to pray. Banerjee incorporated the BJP’s perceived anti-women stance and the importance of peaceful coexistence in her speech. She questioned the BJP’s silence on women’s issues and reiterated the contributions and sacrifices made by women in religious texts and mythology. Banerjee also urged people not to be divided on the basis of religion and emphasized the difficulty of undoing the consequences of such division. She called for a united front against the BJP in Bengal and stressed the role of the state in ensuring peaceful coexistence among followers of all faiths. Banerjee further criticized other opposition parties for their inadequate response to the BJP’s politics, highlighting her own visits to places of worship representing different religions. She emphasized her ability to fight against the BJP and expressed disappointment with seat-sharing talks with the Congress. Banerjee urged strong regional parties to be allowed to contest independently and called for a one-on-one fight with the BJP in at least 300 seats. She warned other parties against taking actions that would strengthen the BJP and accused the BJP of attempting to destroy religious harmony. Banerjee reminded the audience of the Delhi riots during the protests against the National Register of Citizens. The Sampriti Rally commenced from Hazra and witnessed a significant gathering of Trinamool supporters along its route. Banerjee’s speech also highlighted the BJP’s alleged attempts to divide the Hindu and Muslim communities.
