India’s abysmal show at the Asian Cup – zero points, zero goals, and six goals conceded in three games – has raised concerns about Igor Stimac’s future as the senior national coach. Stimac, despite his nationalistic grandstanding on social media, has refused to take responsibility for the team’s poor performance. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is now looking at the upcoming March 2024 meetings with Afghanistan in the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers as an opportunity to address the coach’s future. India’s chances of advancing to the third round of the World Cup qualifiers are high, with expected victories over Afghanistan and Kuwait. However, Stimac’s recent clashes with the Indian Super League (ISL) over player availability and preparation camp time, along with controversies in Qatar, have put his position under scrutiny. Despite a two-year contract extension, there are indications that the relationship between India and Stimac has soured. Stimac has been linked to the Dinamo Zagreb job in Croatia, according to reports in the Croatian media. The appointment of Trevor Sinclair, a former English international with little coaching experience, just ahead of the Asian Cup has also raised eyebrows. The AIFF, including the Technical Committee, appears to be unclear about Sinclair’s role in the team and the reasons behind his appointment. The AIFF will review the appointment along with Stimac’s report, and discussions are expected to take place. India’s president, Kalyan Chaubey, will also be present for the review. The AIFF’s decision on Stimac’s future as the senior national coach will have significant implications for Indian football.
