More treated water will be supplied to industries in Chennai from the Chembarambakkam reservoir as part of Metrowater’s plan to improve sewage management and boost revenue. Metrowater aims to supply at least 15 million liters per day (MLD) of treated water to 135 or more SIPCOT industries in Gummidipoondi. Currently, Metrowater already supplies around 90 MLD of reused water to 565 industries in different areas of the city. The revenue generated from the sale of treated water has exceeded ₹112 crore, indicating a strong demand for reusable water. By expanding the capacity of the Kodungaiyur TTRO plant and constructing additional pipelines, the supply of treated water will be increased, reducing industries’ reliance on freshwater from the Chembarambakkam reservoir. The increased supply will also help augment water supply in the city. The Chennai Metrowater’s successful model of water reuse has been highlighted as a case study in the Central Pollution Control Board’s report on sewage plants in the country. The plan is expected to promote the acceptance of tertiary-treated water for various purposes, including drinking, thereby changing people’s mindset about the usability of treated water.
