Bengaluru Traffic Police Crack Down on Footpath Riders

The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) have decided to intensify their crackdown on bikers riding on pavements with scant regard for pedestrians. In response to complaints from the general public, especially senior citizens, the police have swung into action and collected a total of Rs 7.2 lakh in penalties from footpath riders. This action focused around educational institutions, where a whopping 1,466 bikers were booked. The problem of footpath riding has become a major irritant for residents, causing inconvenience and endangering the lives of pedestrians. The police action comes as a response to the public’s demand for stricter enforcement of traffic laws. Not only do footpath riders pose a risk to pedestrians, but they also damage the pavements, making them unusable for their intended purpose. The police are determined to tackle this issue head-on and ensure the safety and convenience of the city’s residents. First-time offenders will be fined Rs 500 under the Motor Vehicles Act, while repeat offenders will face an FIR. The crackdown on footpath riders is part of the traffic police’s larger strategy of contactless enforcement of traffic rules, but physical enforcement will be carried out in cases of footpath riding. Residents are encouraged to report locations with rampant footpath riding so that special drives can be conducted in those areas as well. The police are committed to addressing this issue and restoring the proper usage of pavements in Bengaluru.
