The Karnataka Congress legislators, along with the three associate members and 29 Members of Legislative Council (MLCs), are set to stage a protest in New Delhi on February 7th. The protest is against the alleged financial injustice faced by the state in the last five years. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar addressed the press, highlighting the loss incurred by Karnataka in terms of central grants and devolution of funds. Shivakumar mentioned that Karnataka has suffered a loss of at least Rs 50,000 crore. He emphasized the need to raise their voice against the injustice and demand the owed money from the central government.

Shivakumar also mentioned that despite raising concerns about the drought in the state, Karnataka has not received any financial assistance from the Centre. He expressed his lack of concern about the funds allocated to other states and urged the central government to give Karnataka its due share. The Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and the Karnataka government will participate in the protest, seeking permission from the Delhi police for a suitable protest location.

Shivakumar stated that all the 138 MLAs and 29 MLCs from Karnataka will travel to Delhi on February 6th evening. The protest’s timing, with the 15th Finance Commission’s tenure ending soon, was questioned, but Shivakumar clarified that they want to ensure that the injustice faced by Karnataka is noticed and addressed by the central government.

In addition to the protest, Shivakumar also mentioned the impending appointment of party cadres to the positions of boards and corporation chairman. He said that the names have been identified and a list has been prepared, but the announcement has been delayed due to their busy schedule with the state budget. The department ministers have been informed about the appointments and given instructions regarding the same.

Responding to former JD(S) chief minister H D Kumaraswamy’s comments about elected representatives speaking of breaking the country, Shivakumar criticized Kumaraswamy for becoming the spokesperson of the BJP. He remarked that Kumaraswamy’s ideological commitment seems to have changed since he wore a saffron shawl in Mandya.
