Toxic Threat to Durgam Cheruvu’s Ecosystem

Toxic Threat to Durgam Cheruvu’s Ecosystem

Behind the dazzling lights of the revamped Durgam Cheruvu, lies the reality of a lake that’s grappling with pollution. The recent water testing study conducted by TOI-BITS Pilani in Hyderabad has shown distressingly low levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the lake. Both sides of the lake exhibited similar DO levels of around 3.3 mg/l, indicating the presence of pollutants such as industrial waste and sewage. However, a more detailed study is required to identify specific components like chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the permissible DO limits should be no less than 10 mg/l. The low DO levels can directly impact the lake ecosystem and aquatic life. In December 2023, thousands of lifeless fishes were found floating on the surface of Durgam Cheruvu, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Environmentalists have been calling for immediate measures to address the pollution and restore the lake’s health.

The Telangana State Control Board’s report, spanning from 2019 to 2023, indicated consistently low DO levels in the water body, dropping as low as 0.1 mg/l at times. Moreover, a study titled ‘Organic Micropollutants in Durgam Cheruvu Lake’ identified a total of 183 compounds, including pharmaceuticals, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, hormones, steroids, UV filters, plasticizers, cyanotoxins, and metabolites. Pharmaceuticals emerged as the major pollutant, constituting 50% concentration. These pollutants pose significant threats to both human health and aquatic animals.

The study emphasizes the potential harm caused by these pollutants, especially when mixed together. In response to the situation, the Telangana High Court has intervened and established a three-member expert committee to address the deteriorating condition of Durgam Cheruvu.

It is essential to take immediate action to reduce pollution sources, improve water treatment processes, and restore the ecological balance of Durgam Cheruvu. The preservation of this vital water resource is crucial for maintaining a healthy ecosystem and ensuring the well-being of aquatic life and human populations in the region.
