Following a fortnight of conducting house-to-house surveys for Maratha reservation, educators throughout the state of Maharashtra are once again absent from their classrooms. Half of the school teachers have been assigned election duties, leading to dissatisfaction among them, especially in Mumbai where educators have decided to boycott the election process. Teachers argue that the burden of finishing the syllabus and preparing students for exams has left them overwhelmed with additional responsibilities. Despite the Right to Education Act exempting teachers from non-teaching duties, teachers find themselves compelled to undertake various tasks. Anil Bornare, a teacher leader, plans to approach election and education officials to request exempting teachers from election duties. Teachers are concerned about managing election tasks while also focusing on exam preparation and daily online updates. The overburdening of election duties exclusively on teachers raises concerns about the educational prospects of middle-class students in government and private-aided schools. Authorities have mandated teachers to report to the election office or face disciplinary actions. Anil Bornare questions why other central service employees are not considered for election duties, pointing out the unfair burden placed on teachers.
