A fast-moving and powerful winter storm hit parts of New England and New York on Tuesday, causing significant disruptions in the region. The storm, known as a Nor’easter, brought heavy snowfall and strong winds of up to 60 miles per hour. Around 13 million people remained under a winter storm warning, and places like Farmington, Connecticut, and Sussex, New Jersey received over a foot of snow. The storm also led to the delay and cancellation of over 1,100 flights. Additionally, around 130,000 homes and businesses experienced power outages in various states. In New York City, people saw between three to eight inches of snowfall. The snow disrupted roads, schools, and travel plans. School districts across the region canceled in-person classes, and New York City held remote classes for its 1 million students. However, technical difficulties were faced, leading to challenges in accessing the remote learning facility. Efforts were made to clear streets with the help of over 2,000 trucks and snowplows. Property owners were urged to clear snow from sidewalks to prevent icy conditions. Despite the storm, campaigners for a special election offered free rides to the polls to encourage voter turnout.
