After another round of discussions, the Centre and farmers in India will convene again on Sunday to address the ongoing protest. Talks have been stuck on three primary demands put forth by the farmers—the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP), the use of a comprehensive cost formula to calculate MSP, and farm loan waivers. The demonstration is likely to expand as the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has decided to join the movement and organize coordinated actions in support of their 21-point demand charter. Despite the assurance from the government ministers, including Arjun Munda, Piyush Goyal, and Nityanand Rai, that they will return for further discussions, the farmers have decided to continue with their ‘Delhi Chalo’ call and remain stationed at the Shambhu border. The meeting was attended by Union ministers, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and lasted for around five hours. Union minister Anurag Thakur expressed optimism about the upcoming talks and stressed the need to resolve the issues. While all pending demands were discussed, the focus remained on the legal guarantee of MSP, the comprehensive cost formula, and loan waivers. The comprehensive cost formula includes imputed cost of capital and rent on farmers’ own land, while the existing formula for MSP calculations comprises paid-out costs and family labor. Farmer leaders argue for legal guarantee to MSP, stating that it does not mean the government has to purchase every quintal under the MSP regime. They suggest that market prices above the MSP benchmark, ensured by legal provisions, would be a more attractive option for farmers to sell their produce. Thakur mentioned that the Modi government has spent significantly more on procurement than the Congress-led UPA regime, highlighting the increase in prices and purchase volume. The farmers’ protest continues as the discussions on their demands continue.
